BMP-2 / БМП-2

Crysis ingame screenshots

Status : Complete

Model info :

This a model I've built in 2010 for the Crysis engine. It is a late production model with anti-radiation plates and late type drive sprocket. It is complete with normal and specular maps. The gun's elevation limits have been respected. However, the ATGM is not functional at this time. The modelling of a BMP-2D modification was also initiated as well as a camouflage re-texturing.

Technical info :

The BMP-2 is an amphibious IFV, introduced during the 1980s. It was mainly destined to replace the BMP-1 during the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan (although the development program for a replacement for the BMP-1 had started already in 1972). The BMP-1's low gun elevation proved to be a major problem due to the terrain's mountainous nature. The BMP-2's almost vertical gun elevation limit remedied to this fact. However, the BMP-1's 73mm main cannon was replaced by a 30mm rapid-fire automatic cannon, housed in a larger, 2 seats turret. The armament is completed by a 7,62x54mm PKT mg and a 9M113 Konkurs (AT-5) ATGM as well as the descent partys (up to 7 troops) individual weapons, which can be used thanks to the firing ports in the hull and left rear door. Six smoke pods are attached to both sides of the turret. The rear doors also serve as fuel tanks.
Although the chassis is substantially the same as the BMP-1, it has improved armor and engine. Later production BMP-2s had anti-radiation plates, similar to the ones used for the T-72B, on the turret, driver and front passenger hatches. The vehicle also provides NBC protection.
During the military operations in Afghanistan, several modifications have been introduced, most notably the BMP-2D (designated BMP-2E by western observers). This modification (In service since 1982) has additional armor plates on the hull's side and on the turret, as well as lower and reinforced side skirts. It also has provision for mounting a mine clearing system under the nose of the vehicle. However, due to the added weight, this version is not amphibious anymore.
